Star Wars: Battlefront Trailer Revealed Today
Great news for Star Wars game fans. DICE Studios showed off a trailer for the upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront at the Star Wars celebration in Annaheim today, and it looks great.
Star Wars: Battlefront will be the third game in the series, and makes use of the Frostbite 3 engine just like Battlefield 4 and Battlefield: Hardline. This is the same engine that was introduced with Bad Company, and allows for realistic outdoors environments that can be completed destroyed by your firepower.
The reveal video gives us a taste of an Endor-like combat environment complete with Walkers, Y-Wings and a visit from Darth Vader himself. The characters have surprisingly natural looking movement, from running, riding vehicles, gesturing, all the way to kneeling and interacting with objects. At first it’s hard to believe we’re looking at footage generated by a game engine.
Suddenly, one of the characters looks toward the camera, and the suspension of disbelief is lost. As good as model rendering is these days, we still have an uncanny valley when you look at a computer generated face and just know it’s not a real human.
To be fair, what we do see on screen is state of the art; these characters are as close as any can come to looking realistic. Brief face shots of running characters are harder to tell; they are really well done. Star Wars is a great franchise for this because a lot of characters are non-human or wear helmets. The end result is a lot of realistic-movement on screen and models that look like they could be people. Great job, guys.
