Grand Theft Auto Goes Ape

We love Grand Theft Auto so much that it was the reason we bought a PlayStation 2 in the first place. The newest instalment in the franchise doesn’t disappoint with its blockbuster movie-style budget and expansive world. The game gets even weirder/more fun when played on a PC because of the opportunity for wacky mods.

If the Silent Hills cancellation got you down, at least you can explore a snowy ghost town not ordinarily available in GTA5 with the help of a mod. Not interesting enough? How about becoming a flying monkey with a machine gun that shoots cars instead of bullets?

Looking at DirectX 12

A lot has been said about the capabilities of the hardware inside gaming consoles, but we don’t buy these things because of their specs. We buy consoles to play games. It doesn’t really matter what graphics chipset is running (hint: they are all based on Radeon), what matters is the software running on them.

Consoles have a lot going for them as dedicated game machines and media centres, but if you want to see where the future is you need look no farther than the latest PC developments. Most people don’t have screaming rigs with 4 graphics cards, but those that do are serious about their craft and are seeing what console gamers will be enjoying five years early.

In this video, Square Enix shows off what is possible using DirectX 12 to create cinema-quality interactive scenes with millions of on-screen politics. The results are stunning.

Fallout: New Vegas Drops in North America Tommorow

Ubehebe Crater, Death Valley, CAFor those of you like me who are eagerly anticipating the release of Fallout: New Vegas, tomorrow is the big day!  For those of you are unfamilair with the franchise, Fallout is a grim depiction of the a post-apocalyptic future – as it was envisioned in the 1950s.  Fallout 3 stands as one of my favourite games made yet, and for those who have not tried and are curious, this piece of software is highly recommended.  And yes, this image is just Death Valley, not a nuclear blast, but hey – it looks convincing, doesn’t it?

Civilization 5 on the way

It was announced today that 2K will be releasing Civilization 5.  A major change already announced is that the new game will jump to a hexagonal grid from the traditional square grid.  Other gameplay changes will supposedly allow more complex diplomacy and more massive wars with the ability to bombard enemy forces from behind your lines.  According to the IGN piece, the engine is being built anew from the ground up.
